Conference "The Future of Agriculture in Masuria: Resilience – Biodiversity – Security"

On 17 April 2026, a conference summarising the EcoReadyMasuria project entitled “The Future of Agriculture in Masuria: Resilience – Biodiversity – Security” was held at the Masurian Centre for Biodiversity and Education “Kumak” in Urwitałt.

The event brought together over 60 participants – representatives of the scientific community, farmers, advisors, and public institutions – creating a space for joint discussion on the challenges and development directions of agriculture in the context of climate change. The conference programme included expert presentations as well as a showcase of results from activities carried out within the EcoReadyMasuria Living Lab. Participants had the opportunity to learn about the outcomes of experiments conducted on demonstration farms and research on biodiversity in the fields of Mazuria. Particular attention during the event was given to issues related to water management, soil quality, and the role of biodiversity in building farm resilience.

An important part of the conference consisted of panel discussions addressing, among others, the role of biodiversity in strengthening agricultural resilience, the future of resilient crop varieties and alternative plant species, and the potential of biopreparations as a supplement or alternative to mineral fertilisers. The conclusions drawn from these discussions highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach to agricultural adaptation – including improving soil quality, increasing water retention, and developing knowledge- and data-driven practices.

The conference demonstrated that the future of agriculture in Masuria depends on effectively combining scientific knowledge, farmers’ experience, and well-designed public policies. Participants unanimously pointed out that climate change is already affecting agricultural production, and that the key challenges concern water management, soil quality, and the stability of the food system.

The event also provided an opportunity to present recommendations for agricultural policies and to discuss further actions and cooperation within the EcoReadyMasuria framework. In closing, the organisers emphasised the importance of continuing joint efforts to strengthen the resilience of agriculture in the region.

This subproject received funding from the ECO-READY project (grant agreement number 101084201) under an open call funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation program.
